On a wet and grey Saturday, the boys arrived full of hope and happiness, despite being in Milton Keynes. A questionable pre game playlist courtesy of Grovesy was the soundtrack to the pre warm up nuptials, writes Tom Powell.
The whistle blew and we were off. Who else but Cockles to open up the scoring. A delicious Gloucester ball executed perfectly sent the captain over, 7-0 to the All Blacks. They swiftly fired back with a try built off well executed hands down the line. A period of colossal collisions and slow play ensued, only to be interrupted by a flying intercept try by young Sam Malton. Blink and you’ll miss him. Cockles slotted a couple more penalties, and missed touch from 5 metres out. Alex Jackowski tackled everything that moved. A frustrating first half for the all blacks saw them only slightly ahead at the half.
After some choice words, and genius tactical analysis at half time, such as, “run straight,” the boys were ready to finish the job, and boy did they turn up. The question was, when were the subs coming on? After some slick hands, the captain touched down in the corner earning his second try. What a player. 10 minutes into the second half, still no subs. Milton Keynes managed to touch down again in the second half, however this was swiftly reciprocated by captain Cockles again, slicing through with a divine 45. 20 minutes into the second half, still no subs. From then on it was a case of seeing the game out. 10 minutes left, subs? “HERE COMES THE BOMB SQUAD!” cried Barns, as all 5 substitutes were launched into battle. 10 minutes of hard graft was all that was left. Powelly tackled a fat lad. The All Blacks won a penalty in the dying moments and the ball was sent into touch to end the game, a tremendous 15-38 win for the lads.
A serious display of grit and determination in the second half got the team over the line, ending a fine display from the Gosford boys. Costley leading the points scored, Pricey winning man of the match, and a special mention to Alex Jackowski who put his body on the line in his last match for the club for an extended period of time. A tremendous day out for the chaps.
